Lenny Cottrell (Owner)
"Upon completion of a 27 year career in law enforcement, I decided to pursue what has always been another passion of mine-fitness. Through my coaching experience in CrossFit, I have been able to expand upon my desire to help people achieve their personal health and fitness goals-the ultimate reward."

"I am so proud to have joined my husband Len and the other great coaches at CrossFit Escalate as part of the training staff after receiving my Level 1 Certification in 2016.
I am passionate about all things concerning health and fitness and look forward to helping all our athletes reach their ultimate fitness goals.
I am also excited about spearheading and instructing our CrossFit Kids program (Sept. 2017) which will allow me to combine my love of teaching with my love of fitness - 'Challenge Accepted/Let's Do This!'"
"Sports and fitness have always been a part of my life. From playing softball in Khoury league to volleyball in high school and always wanting to be in the gym lifting weights, running or boxing, I have always kept some level of fitness in my lifestyle.
Fast forward to a fantastic and eye opening career in the fashion industry, I always needed an outlet at the end of the day. Working out and running continued to fill that need.
After having two kids my career and working out came to a standstill. Everything became about taking care of my kids. During my second pregnancy I was diagnosed with Medullary thyroid cancer. Having been in total denial the entire time (which to this day I believe got me through it) all forms of fitness seemed to stop. I just needed to get through the pregnancy and cut the cancer out. That was the focus. Until one day some friends signed me up for a 1/2 marathon race. From that point forward I decided it was time for me to start taking care of myself, to be a healthy example for my kids. Crossfit came into the picture at the perfect time of my training. Tired of the routine of the gym I needed something different. Crossfit has more than exceeded that expectation.
Crossfit Escalate and it owners and coaches have pushed me and encouraged me to take things to the next level, even when my stomach hurts and I’m scared to try something new. It is the best feeling to realize I am capable and strong enough to take on any challenge. Sometimes the road veers in a new direction. I’m enjoying the journey."
"I have been training at CrossFit Escalate since it's opening in 2014. I achieved my Level1 Training Certification in 2015 and I am enjoying being a part of the coaching staff. I am interested in helping every member realize his/her true workout potential and beyond and I look forward to Escalate's continued expansion."
"Exercise has always been a huge part of my life. In college, while majoring in Exercise Science and competitively playing on the Women's Basketball team, I knew that fitness had turned into something that I loved. Once that came to an end, I wanted to find something that had that same team camaraderie and competition I had found in college. Five years ago a friend encouraged me to take a CrossFit class and it changed my life! Fast forward a few years and I stumbled upon a small gym called CrossFit Escalate...who knew this place and these people would become my second home and family? When I am not attending a 7am class, you can find me on the basketball court stomping around in 6 inch heels, yelling at referees and occasionally getting a technical since I am also the women's basketball coach at Rutgers-Newark. Lenny and Mary Beth are two of the most inspiring people I have ever met and what they have built here is so rare, I am so lucky to be a part of it!"
"For me, weight loss and body image was always a challenge. While I was always athletic, (softball, cross country, half marathons, mud runs) I always struggled with my weight. I tried plenty of diets and plenty of sports but nothing ever stayed with me until CrossFit. CrossFit has changed my life in so many ways and has made me stronger mentally, physically, and more capable of overcoming whatever life throws at me. Not only have I found my true passion, but I have found a lifestyle that works for me. Since I started CrossFit, I have lost 60lbs, gained incredible strength and endurance, and truly have found love in myself. Coaching has helped me share my journey with others who struggle with the day to day grind of life. This gym is my second family and I couldn’t have done it without their encouragement and love. I am so thankful that I can now give back to this box what they so selflessly gave to me."
“I’ve always loved a good challenge and the thrill of exploring something new. I grew up playing every sport from softball, tennis, and soccer to gymnastics and swimming. In high school I was a competitive track athlete and soon made the transition to college as a Division 1 sprinter/hurdler. It was there that I was first introduced to weight lifting as a part of our strength training program. As an adult, I continue to push my limits by exploring new ways to challenge myself and have recently taken up Brazilian jiu jitsu. I also have a love for the outdoors, hiking, and traveling.
My passion for fitness lead me to CrossFit in 2013 when I was studying abroad in Argentina. I became so involved that I began taking classes twice a day and earned my CrossFit Level One Certificate the following year, in October 2014. I love that every workout challenges me mentally and physically. My goal is to inspire others to live their best life. As a coach I am humbled by my athletes and am grateful to witness how CrossFit has positively changed their lives. I hope to empower, inspire and motivate my athletes to push their limits, feel accomplished and reach their fullest potential—inside and outside of the gym.”
"My journey with CrossFit and weightlifting started as a way for me to become a better Track and Field athlete. I soon realized however that my true love was for training and fitness itself. I decided to just focus on CrossFit and see what I would be able to do as a competitor. I placed 90th worldwide in the 2017 CrossFit Games Open 16-17 Teenage Division and 6th place worldwide in the 2017 Team Festivus Games competition. As much as I love to compete and work out, coaching has become an ever greater passion of mine. Helping people reach their goals is an incredible feeling and getting to share knowledge I have learned throughout my years of CrossFit is an awesome privilege. I am super excited to be coaching at CrossFit Escalate and to be a part of this amazing community!"
